The catcher's mitt is similar to a first base mitt in that it has extra padding, and a hinged, claw-like shape.  This shape helps them to catch 90+ mile per hour fastballs, and provides a good target for pitchers.  It is called a mitt due to the lack of individual fingers, like a mitten. 

When catching a knuckleball pitcher, a larger catchers mitt will be used due to the movement of the ball.  Unlike other baseball gloves, catchers mitts are measured around the circumference.  Typical mitt sizes are 32 inches to 34 inches in circumference.

Most catchers mitts are for right hand throwing players, but left hand mitts are also available but are very rare.
